Debacles of the English Language

A note to those who desire to be offended: I post these out of lighthearted fun. Life is funny, and that’s okay. A little levity can be a good thing. I also extend my thanks to the creators of these debacles as they have helped me show my students what not to do.


May I quote you on that?

Oh, the humanity! Question marks never did anything to deserve such abuse. The sign maker used so many quotes, the couldn’t afford to end the sentence with a “period.”

The loss of life in the humanities department could have been staggering.

In the highly unlikely event of an emergency, please offer constructive criticism regarding the building.

National Catholic Register, we pray for thee.

Why would one wish to dispose of contemplative nuns?
It would appear that the Pope speaks to cats around the end of December, and the cats have questions.

There is not enough ink in my red pen for this one.

The excessive use of apostrophes deprived this ad.
Choose just one way to screw this up, please.
Apostrophes still do not form plurals, not even at a college cafeteria.

There are subjects and verbs having heated disagreements.

I’m all atwitter over this one.

It’s time for a new proofreader.

It might have been a terrible abbreviation, but the casino was packed!
